Jawatankuasa Penduduk Zon 3
Resident Committee (USJ12 to USJ27)

Press Release Dated 25 June 2003

We, the Jawatankuasa Penduduk (JKP) Zone 3 (USJ 12 to 27), are issuing this press release in response to press reports on the police action in USJ 17 on the night of Wednesday, 18 June 2003 which involved the discharge of firearms. The JKP feels that no one should jump to conclusions about the events and that the proper course of action is to wait for the results of the official investigation of the incident to obtain input from all parties involved so as to arrive at the truth.

Statement of Support

The JKP would like to express the support of USJ residents for the active police supervision and action in the USJ neighbourhoods covered by JKP Zone 3. We appreciate the fact that on June 18 the police officers were patrolling our neighbourhood and this makes us feel more confident that the police are actively working to reduce the high crime rate in USJ.

In addition to the latest incident above we would also like to record our appreciation to the police for the following achievements and examples of good relations with USJ residents:

(a)  the break up of a major car theft syndicate on 4 June and the success in reducing the incidents of car thefts in USJ.

(b) prompt response from USJ 8 police station on several occasions in USJ 13 and 17 as well as other USJ neighbourhoods in responding to emergency calls involving suspected burglary.

(c) the kind attendance by the police during the kickoff of the USJ 18 day time patrol by female residents.

(d) a special service to residents by USJ 8 police for the last two years during major holidays where the police showed extra effort and commitment by conducting patrols and even leaving a note in letter boxes stating the time they checked the houses.

We would further like to state that the residents of USJ Zone 3 have always had a very close and mutually beneficial relationship with our police force. The Neighbourhood Watch committees in Zone 3 have held numerous dialogue sessions with the police and continue to maintain other informal contacts as well.

Appeal for More Police Resources

We take this opportunity to appeal to the authorities to allocate more police resources to USJ in view of the current shortage. The urgency of the situation is illustrated by the following statistics:
  • Pondok Polis USJ 8 has a total personnel of 55.
  • Total area under their jurisdiction is 2,800 acres covering USJ, Alam Megah and Batu Tiga.
  • This area contains 87,000 households.
  • Total estimated population is 400,000.
  • Total number of vehicles used by the police: 1 Perodua Kancil.
  • Police to resident ratio in USJ is 1:7,500 while the national average is 1:250.

Signed
Andy Lim
Chairman
JKP Zon 3 Residents' Committee
