JEFF Ooi, chairman of
USJ-Subang Jaya e-community www.usj.com.my
"The USJ-Subang Jaya area is a unique location because it is purely a
residential area with no office or commercial centre. That is why we
created our own website to keep in touch with the community.
Since the township was developed in several phases, it was difficult to
have a close-knit community. But the online discussions have created so
much interest that we are constantly updating information on our website.
About 80% of the households here are PC owners and out of this, 46% are
Internet enabled.
Majority of the community are working- class people. We began with online
discussions and postings on informing the public |
|
about traffic jams as they
helped people stay away from the bumper-to-bumper crawl.
We are taking a liberal approach on the freedom of speech on the website
but that must come with responsibility. We want the online community to be
actively engaged in online discussions and that is a way of keeping
contact with the community, which may be your next door neighbour.
On average we have about 1.2 million hits per month, 800,000 page views
per month and 85,000 per month of unique users. The usage of the website
has grown four-fold since three years ago. We are also self-resilient in
terms of funding for running the website. So far, we have forked out less
than RM5,000 but it entails a lot of time. |
