Anti Dengue Awareness Campaign

USJ23 Neighbourhood

27/04/2003 - On this bright and sunny morning, more than 300 residents of USJ13 gathered at the padang in front of the SMK USJ13 school to witness the launch of  the Anti Dengue Awareness Campaign co-organised by Jawatankuasa Penduduk (JKP) Zon 3 and USJ13 Rukun Tetangga.

The campaign to stress awareness of this killer disease to all residents of JKP Zon3 (which covers USJ12 to USJ27) was launched by Subang Jaya ADUN, YB Dato' Lee Hwa Beng.

Dato' Lee also officiated at the official opening of the New Community Hall and Basketball Court located at USJ13.

Andy Lim (Chairman, JKP Zon 3) told the crowd gathered that there were 157 recorded cases of Dengue Fever in the whole of Subang Jaya and USJ for the first 4 months of this year. (16 cases were from Zon 3)

The message of this campaign is loud and clear, Dengue Kills. You must become responsible for the cleanliness of your surroundings, do not continue to endanger the lives of your family, your neighbours and friends, take positive action today.

16/03/2003 - At 11.40am on this quiet Sunday morning, Dato' Lee Hwa Beng, the State Assemblyman of Subang Jaya declared war even without a UN sanction. He does not need one either. Flanked by Mr Pierre Dievart, the Regional Manager of Carrefour, Dato' Lee with Mr. Gary Brown, President of Sara Lee Malaysia or better known as  Mr Ridsect,  the distributor of this weapon of mass destruction against mosquitoes and Mr Raymond Chong, General Manager of SIME-UEP donned their gas masks and armed with “bazookas” blasted the giant mocked up AEDES mosquito at Subang Walk Community Area at the foot of the Carrefour Pedestrian bridge. Fortunately, there  were no human casualties but there will  be if we ever lose the war against the Aedes mosquitoes said Dato Lee in his opening address to a  morning crowd of 150 people who were gathered there to witness the launch.

Part of the parade was an inspection of the frontline guards manning the 5 booths where the captured enemy dead and alive and its weapons were exhibited. Our intelligence officer informed us that our enemies were like suicide bombers when strapped with the dengue virus. They do not differentiate the rich from the poor, young from the old or the colour of your skin.  This symbolic launch of the Anti Dengue Awareness Campaign by our war generals heralded the start of a 3 month long drawn war. Our enemy has earlier claimed the lives of two USJ residents in USJ 3 back in 2001.

At the war briefing which started off at 11.00am, we were told that the number of reported confirmed cases sky rocketed to 123 cases in the first 10 weeks of this year compared to a total of 270 cases reported over the 52 weeks period last year. It was comforting to know that USJ/SJ which had held the No 1 position for 3 successive years from 1995 in the whole country is now relegated to No 3, but we must not rest on our laurels for the doomsday prophet,  the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that in the forthcoming months of April to August being the wet season,  our enemy will strike even harder as this war conditions best suited them. Thus,  MPSJ, the war Council  took the initiative to organize this 3 months campaign after some of its fellow brothers were kicked in the butts for doing nothing by our double crossers,  the opposition parties.

In her speech earlier, Dr. Suriani bt Ismail,  the Director of Department of Health and Town Services of MPSJ said that it was time to stop all the finger pointing and for all parties to work together to keep the environment clean and clear of the dengue menace. Her department will monitor the situation closely and all intelligences and reports of cases of dengue outbreak will be analysed and top priority will be given to tackle confirmed cases rather that suspected cases as resources and manpower are a constraint. The public at large will have to play a active role in the “Prevention is Better than Cure” strategy game.

Dato Lee in his short speech,  identified 3 fronts that are crucial for the success in this war game.  They are the government sector represented by MPSJ,  the corporate sector and the foot soldiers that is you and me.   He was pleased with the enlistment of  Carrefour, Sara Lee (not related to Dato' Lee)  Alam Flora who is not treating this issue as rubbish,  SIME UEP and Sunway, the developers. The 3 month war exercise will involve a four prongs attack namely:

  1. Awareness campaign using GR 7WF  (Gotong Royong at 7 war fronts)  when the 7 JKP Zones launch  their local war

  2. Precision “airdrop” of leaflets into the letter boxes to educate the general public of the menace of the diseases and its causes

  3. Forming the SWAT team of the Anti Dengue Squad  that will conduct  Search and Destroy Operations and

  4. Sending the Stormtroopers comprising of MPSJ officers armed with the summon books  storming into schools, construction sites,  commercial outlets and residential houses.

During the recent  blitz, some 3,863 premises were searched and neutralized  with  84 direct hits where summons inclusive of 3 on government premises were issued without mercy. Breeding the Aedes larvae for your Flower Horn fish is not an acceptable reason. It is treason.   If the campaign is a successful one,  by which measurement is the drastic decline in reported cases,  then there will be liberation party at the closing ceremony 3 months from today at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall.   If not,  you can be sure that the venue will be changed to the Sunway Medical Centre.  It will be interesting then to see who is the victor in this  Aedes war.
